THE NILE PERCH is a legendary fish. For example, there is a sacred necropolis of Nile Perch near Luxor in Egypt and the species is featured on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. Notwithstanding this, it is only since the 1980s that ordinary anglers have been able to fish regularly for this remarkable species, which is one of the biggest freshwater fish in the world.

The Guinness Book of World Records cites a huge Nile Perch weighing an incredible 510lb (23ikg) as being caught by local fishermen on Lake Victoria. Moreover, on Lake Nasser, in Egypt, a number of Nile perch weighing well in excess of 2OOlb have been caught by visiting anglers and the largest perch reliably recorded by the Egyptian fisheries department is a massive 378Ib (171k9). Perhaps not surprisingly, in recent years an increasing number of anglers have journeyed to Africa, and especially to Lake Nasser, in search of these enormous fish. Travel to Lake Nasser is relatively easy, and certainly affordable for most people, and this book imparts the exciting adventures of just some of those who have had very large catches there.
